Accessibility testing gets treated as an afterthought more often than any other kind of QA, usually bolted on right before launch, if at all. That's backwards. A meaningful share of your potential users rely on assistive technology, larger text, keyboard navigation, screen readers, and a product that ignores them isn't just less inclusive. It's leaving real users, and real revenue, on the table.
What accessibility testing actually checks
Accessibility isn't one test, it's a set of practices that together determine whether your product genuinely works for people with different abilities and different ways of interacting with software.
- Keyboard navigation. Can every interactive element be reached and used without a mouse, in a logical order?
- Screen reader compatibility. Does assistive technology announce content in a way that actually makes sense, not just technically present?
- Color contrast. Is text readable for users with low vision or color blindness, not just readable to someone with perfect eyesight in good lighting?
- Focus management. When a modal opens, does focus move there? When it closes, does focus return sensibly?
- Semantic structure. Are headings, labels, and landmarks used correctly, so the page's structure actually makes sense when read aloud?
WCAG gives you a target, not a finish line
The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) are the standard most teams aim for, typically at the AA level. They're a useful, testable target. But passing an automated WCAG scanner isn't the same as your product actually being usable by someone navigating it with a screen reader.
Automated accessibility scanners catch roughly a third of real issues. The rest require someone to actually try using the product the way an assistive-technology user would.
That's the gap manual accessibility testing fills, actually tabbing through a form, actually listening to how a screen reader announces your checkout flow, not just running a linter and calling it done.
Where accessibility issues hide
Some of the most common accessibility problems we find aren't exotic:
- Form fields with no associated label, so a screen reader announces nothing useful.
- Custom dropdowns and modals that trap keyboard focus, or don't trap it when they should.
- Icon-only buttons with no accessible name, functionally invisible to non-visual users.
- Color used as the only signal for meaning, like a red border with no text, for a validation error.
None of these are hard to fix. They're just easy to miss if accessibility isn't part of how you test, not an audit you run once a year.
