Appium: One Automation Approach for iOS and Android

Mobile automation has a problem web automation doesn't: iOS and Android are genuinely different platforms, with different native UI frameworks, different accessibility APIs, and historically, different automation tools entirely. Appium's core idea was to give teams one consistent approach across both, and it's remained the standard for exactly that reason.

How Appium works

Appium is built on the WebDriver protocol, the same underlying standard Selenium uses for web automation, extended to drive native, hybrid, and mobile web apps on both iOS and Android. That shared foundation means teams with existing Selenium expertise can transfer much of that knowledge directly.

  • Cross-platform by design. The same testing approach and, largely, the same test structure applies whether you're automating an iOS or Android app.
  • Language flexibility. Appium supports bindings for Java, Python, JavaScript, C#, and more, fitting into whatever stack a team already uses.
  • Native, hybrid, and mobile web support. One tool covers the full range of mobile app architectures, rather than needing separate tooling per app type.
  • Real device and simulator/emulator support. Tests can run against real hardware or virtual devices, depending on what a given test actually needs to verify.

A simple example

The ~loginButton syntax targets an accessibility identifier, a pattern that also reinforces good accessibility practice, since Appium relies on the same identifiers assistive technology uses.

Where the friction shows up

Appium's flexibility comes with real setup complexity. Configuring device capabilities correctly, managing simulators and emulators, and keeping tests stable across OS updates all require more upfront investment than a typical web automation setup. Element location can also be less reliable than web automation, since native UI hierarchies vary more across app versions and device types.

Appium gives you one consistent testing approach across platforms. It doesn't make mobile automation easy, mobile automation is inherently harder than web automation. It makes it manageable.

Where we use it

We reach for Appium specifically for native and hybrid mobile app automation, typically layered on top of a cloud device provider like BrowserStack for real-device coverage without maintaining physical hardware. It's not the right tool for mobile web testing, where Playwright's mobile viewport emulation is usually simpler and sufficient.
