Selenium has been the backbone of browser automation since long before Playwright or Cypress existed, and it remains one of the most widely used automation tools in the industry. It's not the newest option anymore, but "not newest" and "not right for your team" aren't the same thing, and dismissing Selenium outright is often the wrong call.
What Selenium still does well
- True cross-browser, cross-language support. Selenium WebDriver works with virtually every major browser and supports bindings for Java, Python, C#, JavaScript, and more, valuable for organizations with existing language and tooling standards.
- A massive, mature ecosystem. Two decades of tooling, integrations, and institutional knowledge means most problems a team hits have already been solved, documented, and battle-tested by someone else.
- Grid-based distributed execution. Selenium Grid lets teams run tests across many machines and browser/OS combinations in parallel, valuable for large enterprise test matrices.
- Deep enterprise integration. Many enterprise testing platforms and CI systems have Selenium support baked in from years of being the default.

Notice the explicit WebDriverWait, unlike Playwright and Cypress, Selenium doesn't auto-wait for elements by default. This is both its biggest source of historical flakiness and a place where disciplined engineering matters more than the tool itself.
Where the friction shows up
Selenium's flexibility comes with real tradeoffs:
- No built-in auto-waiting means teams have to write explicit wait logic carefully, and getting it wrong is the single biggest source of flaky Selenium suites.
- Slower initial setup compared to Playwright or Cypress, which ship with more batteries included.
- Debugging failures typically requires more manual instrumentation, screenshots, logs, since there's no built-in trace viewer or time-travel debugger.
Selenium doesn't fail because it's an old tool. It fails when teams treat "no auto-waiting" as a minor detail instead of the core architectural difference it actually is.
When Selenium is still the right call
We reach for Selenium when a project has existing language or platform constraints Selenium's ecosystem serves particularly well, when enterprise infrastructure already standardizes on it, or when a team has deep existing Selenium expertise and a well-architected suite that doesn't need replacing.
