A product can pass every functional test and still fail its users the moment real traffic arrives. Performance problems are sneaky that way, they don't show up when one person is clicking through a demo. The questions performance testing actually answers
Good performance testing isn't just "does it feel fast." It answers specific, measurable questions:
- How does response time change as load increases? A page that loads in 200ms with ten users might take eight seconds with a thousand.
- Where's the actual bottleneck? Database queries, third-party API calls, and unoptimized frontend rendering all produce the same symptom, slowness, but need very different fixes.
- What's the breaking point? Every system has a load level where it stops degrading gracefully and starts failing outright. You want to know that number before your busiest day finds it for you.
- Does the system recover cleanly? After a spike passes, does performance return to normal, or does the system stay degraded?
The three tests that matter most
- Load testing. Simulate expected traffic to confirm the system performs well under normal, and moderately elevated, conditions.
- Stress testing. Push well past expected load to find the actual breaking point and see how the system fails, ideally gracefully, not catastrophically.
- Endurance testing. Run sustained load over a longer period to catch issues that only appear over time, memory leaks, connection pool exhaustion, gradual degradation.
Each answers a different question. Skipping straight to "does it work under normal load" and calling it done misses the scenarios that actually cause incidents.
