There's nothing worse than spending an hour writing detailed bug reports on a build, only to discover the login page was broken the entire time and none of it actually matters yet. Smoke testing exists to prevent exactly that.
What smoke testing actually is
Smoke testing is a quick, shallow pass across the most critical functionality of a build, does it start, does it log in, do the core screens load, before any deeper testing begins. The name comes from hardware testing: power it on and check for smoke before you check anything more detailed.
It's deliberately narrow. A smoke test isn't trying to find every bug, it's trying to answer one question fast: is this build stable enough to be worth testing further?
What a good smoke test covers
- The application starts and the core UI loads without crashing
- Login and basic authentication work
- The primary navigation paths are reachable
- The single most critical business flow, checkout, submission, whatever your product's core action is, functions at a basic level
If any of these fail, testing stops. There's no point running a full regression suite against a build that can't get past login.
Smoke testing isn't about thoroughness. It's a gate, pass it and deeper testing begins, fail it and the build goes back before anyone wastes more time on it.
Where it fits in the pipeline
Smoke testing is the natural first automated check in a CI/CD pipeline, a small, fast suite that runs on every build and fails fast when something fundamental is broken. It should take minutes, not hours. If your "smoke test" takes 45 minutes, it's stopped being a smoke test.
