What makes system testing distinct
System testing is black-box by nature. Testers aren't looking at code, they're interacting with the finished product the way an end user eventually will, verifying that the complete system behaves correctly, end to end, under realistic conditions.
It typically covers a broader set of concerns than any single earlier testing phase:
- Functional correctness across the entire application, not isolated features
- Non-functional requirements, performance, security, usability, evaluated at the system level
- Business requirement validation, does the system actually do what the business needed it to do?
- Environment and configuration, does the system behave correctly in a production-like setup, not just a developer's local environment?
Functional and non-functional, together
A common mistake is treating system testing as purely functional, does clicking this button do the right thing. But system testing done well also evaluates the system's behavior under realistic non-functional conditions: does it hold up under expected load, does it handle a flaky network connection gracefully, is sensitive data protected the way it should be at the system level, not just within a single module.
System testing is the last checkpoint before a product moves toward acceptance testing and release. If a requirement was misunderstood anywhere upstream, this is often where it finally surfaces.
