Usability Testing: Does It Work Isn't the Same as Does It Make Sense

A product can pass every functional test, have zero open bugs, and still be genuinely painful to use. Functional correctness and usability are different qualities, and it's entirely possible to nail one while missing the other completely. Usability testing exists to catch the gap between "technically works" and "actually makes sense to a real person."

What usability testing actually measures

Usability testing observes real (or representative) users attempting real tasks, and pays attention to where they hesitate, get confused, or give up. It typically evaluates:

  • Learnability. Can a new user figure out how to complete a core task without help?
  • Efficiency. Once someone knows how, can they complete it quickly, without unnecessary steps?
  • Error recovery. When someone makes a mistake, does the product help them fix it, or leave them stuck?
  • Satisfaction. Does using the product feel straightforward, or does it feel like a fight?

None of these show up in a functional test suite. They only show up when you watch someone actually try to use the thing.

The five-second test that reveals more than you'd expect

One of the simplest, most revealing usability techniques: show someone a screen for five seconds, then ask what they think it does. If their answer doesn't match what the screen is actually for, that's not a user problem. That's a design problem, and it's one no amount of functional testing would have caught.

Watching one real user struggle with a flow for ten minutes often teaches a team more than a week of internal debate about what users "probably" want.

Common usability issues we find

Some patterns show up across almost every product we test:

  1. Buried critical actions. The most important button on the screen isn't the most visually prominent one.
  2. Unclear error states. A form fails validation with no indication of what actually went wrong, or where.
  3. Inconsistent patterns. The same type of action works differently in two different parts of the same product.
  4. Assumed knowledge. Interfaces built by people who deeply understand the product, tested only by people who also deeply understand it, missing what a first-time user actually needs.

How we run usability sessions

We combine structured task-based sessions, where real users attempt defined goals while we observe, with expert heuristic review, evaluating the interface against established usability principles. Together, they catch both "users get stuck here" and "this violates a pattern users already expect from other software."

The earlier usability testing happens, the cheaper the fixes. Catching a confusing flow in a prototype costs a design iteration. Catching it after launch costs churn, support tickets, and users who quietly leave rather than complain.
