Every other stage of testing asks "does this work correctly?" User Acceptance Testing asks a different, arguably harder question: "does this actually solve the problem it was supposed to solve?" A feature can pass every functional test and still miss the mark on what the business, or the end user, actually needed.
UAT is a different kind of testing
Unlike functional or regression testing, UAT isn't primarily about finding bugs. It's about validating fit, confirming the software meets real business requirements and works the way actual users, or stakeholders, expect it to in practice.
That means UAT is usually performed by:
- Business stakeholders, who understand the requirements the feature was meant to satisfy
- End users or their representatives, who understand how the work actually gets done day to day
- Product owners, validating that what was built matches what was intended
QA has typically already done its work by this point. UAT is the checkpoint that confirms "correct" and "useful" are the same thing here.
What good UAT looks like
Effective UAT isn't a vague "try it out and let us know." It's structured around real scenarios:
- Defined acceptance criteria, agreed before testing starts, not improvised during it.
- Realistic scenarios, based on how the software will actually be used, not simplified happy paths.
- Clear sign-off criteria, so everyone knows what "accepted" actually means.
- A feedback loop, so issues found in UAT get triaged and addressed, not just logged and forgotten.
The gap UAT catches that QA can't
QA teams test against specifications. But specifications are written by people trying to anticipate real-world use, and they're not always right. UAT surfaces the gap between "built as specified" and "actually useful," things like a workflow that's technically correct but takes eleven clicks when users expected three, or a report that has the right data in a format nobody can actually use.
A feature can be bug-free and still be wrong. UAT is where "wrong" gets caught before it ships to everyone.
Making UAT actually effective
